High Deryni  (The Chronicles of the Deryni, volume 3) by Katherine Kurtz

Young King Kelson contends with bigoted clerics, rivals, what amounts to an evil wizard, and a traitor, not to mention a secretive cabal armed with magic.

1973’s High Deryni is the third and final volume in Katherine Kurtz’s Ruritanian historical fantasy series, The Chronicles of the Deryni. High Deryni is by no means the final Deryni book. The reign of...

It’s a hard choice but I think I’m giving the Katherine Kurtz Deryni novels the Game of Thrones treatment
youve got 5.6 billion to make a 7 season 56 episode show airing over 15 years, wdyd
Trying to do a daily dumb little prompt to not think about The Horrors

Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz or How to Suppress Women’a Writing – The Fantasy Edition
I'm over at Galactic Journey again - for the second time this month and a third article is coming later this month, which must be a new record for me - to talk about Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz, a novel which was incredibly influential and yet isn't remembered nearly as well as it should be. For the actual review, head over to Galactic Journey. If you want to know why this novel was so influential - which I obviously couldn't discuss from the 1970 POV of Galactic Journey…

Honestly? I would adore one more book of the Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz. HIgh Deryni was the first fantasy I ever read way back in 1973 and I was hooked.. So just one more adventure with Alaric and Duncan and my all time favourite minor character, Sean Lord Derry would be *chef's kiss*.

A few deeper cuts:

-Terry Brooks for the Shannara books, the first 5-6 are bangers
-Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern is great sci-fantasy
-I was deeply into Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series at one point but I'm a weirdo

I'm at Galactic Journey again today, talking about Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz, a very influential fantasy novel that deserves to be remembered more.

A new Deryni novel by Katherine Kurtz like the 70s/80s/90s books.

I love the Deryni series.

Pern is one of the greatest sci-fi series ever.

Favorite books

Other than Tolkien, the books that made the most impact on me were the Dragonlance books, the Deryni books, and the Galactic Milieu Series by Julian May.

A couple of starter suggestions to get things going:

Robin Hobb's Liveship books and, I'd argue, both Katharine Kerr's Deverry & Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books in most respects do.

I *don't* think Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn quite does; lots to like, but its genre interrogation is now a bit stale.

21) Find what you love and apply it to your Sword & Sorcery.

You do not need a doctorate in Welsh history to write S&S set in Wales or inspired by Wales. But the knowledge of history can inform your fiction, and nobody can say that Katherine Kurtz' Deryni saga was less effective for her research.

Evangeline Walton and Katherine Kurtz wrote two of the first new Ballentine Adult Fantasy books in 1970. The Deryni books are definitely recognizable as modern genre Fantasy, too.

Have you read any of the Katherine Kurtz Deryni books? Great romantic high fantasy w/enough “that’s not fair!” injustice plot lines to hook an 8y/o. Start w/Deryni Rising.

Calling yourself doesn't make you a king. Being given Deryni powers by your father's advisor by piercing your ear does.
Calling yourself a king doesn’t make you a king. Being crowned at Car Paravel with your three siblings by Aslan does.
Calling yourself a king doesnt make you a king. Delivering an all-time banger of a speech on St. Crispin’s Day does.

(I'll also say on a specific note that any survey of fantasy religions deeply embedded in worldbuilding and society that misses out the Deryni books is missing a tentpole.)

Started rereading The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams and it's really kind of amazing how much of something like Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels informed it, and how much of A Song of Ice and Fire was informed by this trilogy(?)
