If you have been following the Gaia Mission closely, you will know that DR4 has had a sliding release date, from the end of 2025, to mid 2026 to "end of 2026". But now the date is locked.

It's as if academia doesn't want to retain a single specialist in this stuff. What are people planning to do with Gaia DR4? Make a doorstop? Seriouslyyyy

DR4 will contain ~10x as many variable star classifications in ~4x as many classes, and will have epoch photometry for *all* sources - not just variables.

- Gaia proper motions will be ~4x better
- systematics in parallaxes are better controlled
- reducing systematics is really hard, but very important!
- it means DR4 release will not be before mid-2026, but they're trying very hard to keep it in 2026

We are awaiting Gaia DR4, currently scheduled for 2 Dec 2026.
While DR4 will include improved data for crowded fields like M4, it is not yet clear whether the new astrometry and proper motions will be sufficient to distinguish between a single IMBH and a population of stellar remnants.

The public catalog, the largest & most consistent of its kind, is a treasure trove for astronomers. Furthermore, Gaia DR4 (coming in 2026) will offer more variable star classifications, new variability types, & photometry possibly for all sources, 4/
