Also when I say it's as good as the middling parts of ds3, I think that sounds harsh since it's(so far) my favorite area in ds1, but I think the range of quality in level design in ds3 is quite small
There aren't really any standouts good or bad, but the bar of quality is very high

I was a hater back in 2014 and every time I replay it I soften a bit more on it, and the complete opposite seems to happen every time I replay ds3.

it's even stupider to me because I own their DS3 Isaac and he still mostly holds up and can pistol grip the plasma cutter with both hands no problem

I will say, sen's fortress is exquisitely well designed as a level, and I feel is on par with some of the more middling parts of ds3. It's not too long that you feel super frustrated dying at any point, and navigating it feels great
I think that as can be expected, ds1 has the weakest level design of the 4 I've played. Which isn't to say it's necessarily bad, but it's certainly less satisfying to navigate than it's successors
