One thing I always remember about Aaron Gunn is how he needed a police escort to make a documentary in the DTES.
I’m a small middle aged woman who’s covered many DTES issues, gone inside SROs and homeless encampments - and I certainly didn’t need police to help get the story 🙄

In 2023, I was working with a charity & we did this market to serve food/provide clothes/haircuts for ppl on the DTES. Pete Fry and Ken Sim said they'd come. Pete Fry came, Ken Sim didn't. 2 weeks later, Ken Sim had the homeless people in the park rounded up, their possessions put in garbage cans.

He was a strong advocate for harm reduction services like supervised consumption sites and his administration focused on health approaches instead of punishment.

vancouver reddit is the most confusing place on earth man. incredibly YIMBY comments on anything wrt to visibly quality-of-life things bike/pedestrian infrastructure or density redevelopment but mentions social housing or DTES and immediately everyone is like why can't the poor help themselves
