I do not think that having a DVCS so famously complex that people have had to make a cheat sheet called "oh shit, git" and some junior developers take months to stop being terrified of fucking up in is a good thing!

One thing I love about tools like jj and atuin is that they take things (dvcs and shell history) that are assumed to have well known good enough solutions and show that there's still room for significant improvements to be made

Larry indisputably deserves the credit for both bringing the DVCS to the masses and probably creating the first DVCS (or well, proto-DVCS) that didn't just straight-up suck. One of the other BitMover folks did a research system pre-bk I want to find out more about but I THINK that came later.

The worst case scenario is we all simply standardize on another frontend that takes git from "so actively user-hostile it is probably responsible for driving more people out of programming, especially free software, than RMS" instead of rejecting the gatekeeping hazing ritual disguised as a DVCS.

There was actually a slight difference between Green Book (384x288) and White Book (352x288) video. White Book (VCD) came later, after the first consumer DVCs were already on the market.

This was all somewhat off the back of an earlier proto-DVCS-but-not-quite project, Sun's NSE. But NSE was rigidly hierarchical and I have yet to hear of anyone who used it that has nice things to say. NSElite, BitKeeper and TeamWare's direct forerunner, was largely an attempt to make it bearable.

Somebody already made a better DVCS: Mercurial. But the combination of Linus and GitHub made git victorious in the marketplace. When Bitbucket started supporting git, it was all over.

The actual way BK works is incredibly cool and very elegant. It's all built on a version of the SCCS weave datastructure, which by sheer accident is an astonishingly good fit for a DVCS.
