At Akasaka Fukinuki, Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store. 26 July was Japan's Midsummer Day of the Ox. In Japan, there is a tradition of eating foods beginning with the sound "u" to help people get through the hot summer. Eel is the food most commonly eaten for this occasion. In the foreground is a "Hitsumabushi" with its lid opened, showing grilled eel served over rice. Behind it are grilled eel liver on a skewer, bowls of condiments, a pot of dashi broth, and a cup of green tea. "Hitsumabushi" is a traditional dish from Nagoya consisting of grilled eel served over rice with a soy sauce-based glaze and Sanshō (Japanese pepper). It is enjoyed in several ways, including with condiments and by pouring dashi broth over the rice. "Grilled eel liver (Kimo-yaki)" is a Japanese dish made by threading the livers and other edible organs from several eels onto a skewer, coating them with a sweet soy-based sauce, and grilling them until fragrant.
