Proclus vs Damascius

I was writing the section of my paper on the Syrian-Greek philosopher Damascius’ quest to find what comes before thought and his eureka-like discovery of the idea of potentiality in his blank writing tablet, and I immediately thought of Andy Burnham’s speech and the last 10 years of UK politics…

This is very interesting, thank you. Damascius' blank slate made me think, obliquely, of Kant's flame dancing in the hearth and the "wandering imagination". Your research sounds fascinating.

It feels good to be working on Damascius again. I'd forgotten how extensive my notes were beyond what got incorporated into my two articles on Damascius from Dionysius 31 & 37. In fact, there's an almost complete first draft article on syzygy in Damascius that I basically forgot about!

I need to read what remains of Damascius at some point.

The "Byzantine" philosopher Damascius the Diadochus (VI c., roughly under the reign of Justinian I) was soooooooo close to say something Zen. What a pity. Oh, well...

"Becoming is not simply non-being, but is to subsist at different times in a different part of being," (Damascius, as reported by Simplicius, In Phys. 774f).

Nice formulation of the great maxim from Damascius’ Parmenides commentary (II, 4.22): “All things are in each other peculiarly [panta en allēlois idiōs].”

Onde se lê Damacius é Damascius, perdão pelo erro anterior.

Yay! After hearing Sara Ahbel-Rappe discuss Damascius on the SHWEP I just had to get into the source material!

I really resisted drawing Platonist associations with my own work prior to hearing about Damascius.

Divine confusion here I come!

The latest in Oluwaseyi's series of readings of my work focuses on the constitutive—indeed, cosmogonic—role of theoretical "leaps" in Damascius, and the way that this can transform our grasp of the Platonic system.

This was a fascinating talk, especially in light of the direct testimony of Damascius, in his Philosophical History, concerning the philosopher Asclepiodotus, a student of Proclus and a charismatic presence in late 5th century Aphrodisias.

My AAR proposal was accepted! I will be presenting on "Damascius' Crisis of Participation and Our Own" as part of the Platonism and Neoplatonism Unit.
The abstract is below.

There's an extent to which I think about the way both Pastor Johnny and the CCRU talk about unity, though probably the former especially, and end up feeling like Neoplatonists such as Damascius already kinda had it when they argued unity and multiplicity as different expressions of the same thing.

Interesting details here on Marinus' conversion:

He held the temple of Mount Gerizim was dedicated to Zeus Hypsistos and it is to Zeus Hypsistos that Abraham was consecrated
+
Samaritan religion was a deviation from Abraham's religion
