Created by Mele Broomes Review by Marina Funcasta Assembly @ Dancebase ★★★★ At no point do I remember the beginning of Mele Broomes’ show: her dancers, scattered across the stage, move as if they had always been there, floating. Transfixing us from the moment we enter the room, Broomes’ ensemble appeared to the audience like wafting leaves on a windy day, swaying at the mercy of an external force.

In what feels like an unfurling, we witness our dancers evolve from primitive to civilised states. The word unfurling is ironic, though, seeing as their bodies quite literally become bound up - by costume, mannerisms, social trappings etc. In this gentle and patient demonstration of social development, the every day is defamiliarised in a beautiful, though ultimately tragic, way.

A piece about toxic masculinity that is brilliant in concept but limited by the technical expertise of its lovely (but untrained) cast.
