This cool bridge-like thing is the Daneway portal to the Sapperton canal tunnel. At 3.5km long, it was the longest tunnel of any kind in England at the time it was built in 1789.

Had a great time at Prestbury Hill and Daneway Banks today. At this time of year the birding goes quiet but butterflies take to the air. Many Chalkhill Blue, Small Blue and Silver-washed Fritillaries at Prestbury. No Large Blues at Daneway.

Had a great time at Prestbury Hill and Daneway Banks today. At this time of year the birding goes quiet but butterflies take to the air. Many Chalkhill Blue, Small Blue and Silver-washed Fritillaries at Prestbury. No Large Blues at Daneway.

Thames and Severn Canal. The lower of the pair of Daneway locks from the bridge over the tail of the summit lock. The Daneway Inn (behind the camera) has changed hands again (and makes for a good visit). Buses run from the village at the top of the Company Road into Stroud and Ciren.
