On the set of the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons, Glenn Close underwent an intense transformation to portray Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil. Filmed in authentic French châteaus, the production prioritized historical accuracy, requiring Close to wear period-accurate corsets and undergarments that restricted her waist to 24.5 inches. She described her costumes as armor and noted that the physical constraints helped her embody the character's controlled, predatory presence. Close arrived in Paris with her seven-week-old daughter, describing her post-pregnancy body humorously as 'looking like a loaf of bread.' Despite the physical challenges—including difficulty breathing and eating during long shoot days—she credited the experience with enhancing her performance. Close’s dedication extended to conceptualizing the film's final shot to convey the Marquise's inner turmoil, and she maintained a commanding on-set presence. Her chemistry with co-star John Malkovich was built on theater experience, often rehearsing their scenes like a chess match to perfect timing and tension. Dangerous Liaisons was released by Warner Bros. on December 21, 1988, earning $34.7 million against a $14 million budget and receiving seven Academy Award nominations, winning three for Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Production Design.
