See It On Your Wall "Be First' by Greg Beebe, 2016 Arty-Fact: Playboy has been viewed as many things: a magazine that features nude women, an outlet for award-winning journalists, a crusader for women's reproductive rights, a tool for men's pleasure, and so much more. It also played a far less known but integral role in the fight for civil rights, using its franchise as a weapon in America's culture war. It was ahead of its time when it came to featuring black women in its pages. 'Be First' praises and celebrates Darine Stern (the first African American woman to pose on the cover of Playboy magazine alone – and her originality, drive and ambition to follow her passion even though the general public may not have agreed with it.
