“What are you?” Marcus asked. No answer came immediately. The voice seemed to enjoy that, the way predators sometimes seemed to enjoy letting a wounded thing hear its own blood run before moving in. “A better question,” it said at last, “is why you continue to frame the matter that way.” Marcus kept his expression flat. “I’m open to suggestions.” “You persist in treating identity as if it were singular. Bounded. Fixed to meat and time.” The voice remained mild, almost academic. “You are hardly in a position to defend such quaint ideas.” Marcus glanced down at his braced arm. At the synthetic skin stretched over scars he’d never asked to keep. At the borrowed coat and the binders and the floor moving beneath him because someone had decided his eye wasn't worth fixing right. “You talk like a cult leader who swallowed a machine manual.” “If that is wit, Sergeant, you have deteriorated.” There it was again. Sergeant. Not officer. Not detective. Not convict. The old chain of command. Marcus let the title sit in the air between them and watched what it did to his own pulse. “You knew who I was in that room,” he said. “I know who you have been in many rooms.”

Marcus stepped through and nearly went to one knee. The sky was too large. After hours of walls, shafts, cells, red light, and steel mouths closing around them, the open night struck some primitive part of him as a trick. The western waste stretched away in low ridges of black stone and silver sand. Behind them, the lower walls of Black Sands rose from the earth in broken silhouettes, pylons fading upward into smog and city-glow, the upper tiers lost in polluted cloud. Farther south, the jungle waited as a dark uneven mass beyond the desert, shifting on the edge of the wind like a sleeping giant. Above all of it, Andromeda burned. The old colonists had called it a nebula in the first years because they wanted it to be a soft thing. A beautiful thing. A word from old Earth that belonged in poems, observatories, and schoolrooms rather than over a planet that ate men by the bellyful. Tonight it sprawled across the sky in pale violet and white, enormous behind the thinner places in the high atmosphere, a river of distant fire nobody in the outpost ahead seemed to have time to admire. Marcus stared anyway. Then Ansa stumbled against his side and reminded him the living still had claims. “I am going to say something foolish,” she said. “That’ll be new.” “I am glad to be outside.” “Yeah.” “I don’t want to jinx it.” He got an arm around her before her knees buckled. “Stay upright.” “I was considering passing out in the dirt.” “Later.”
