Today sees the launch of a new campaign by Dartmoor Nature Alliance to bring back Dartmoor’s rainforests 🌳🌿

Last night we gathered at Black Tor Copse to call for its restoration - and to double the area of rainforests on Dartmoor’s commons.

I'm very sceptical that Phil Stocker, head of the National Sheep Association, can tackle Dartmoor's nature crisis. But I'm encouraged he's now stated that "we have to start with [Dartmoor's] SSSIs" & accepts there's an overgrazing problem on the moor.

Words we'll be holding him to!

Campaign win! Duchy of Cornwall announces plan to “double the extent of duchy-managed Atlantic rainforest on Dartmoor by the early 2040s”

This means Black-a-Tor Copse, as well as Wistman’s Wood!

20. Yet on we go, with continued grazing and burning pressure pushing, pushing, pushing Dartmoor’s remaining ecosystems towards Molinia desert. And all subsidised by you and me, the taxpayers.
What explains this perversity?
Power.

How socks helped tell the story of Mesolithic Dartmoor 🧦

Soils are a silent archive beneath our feet. But how do you bring that archive to life? For Emma Stockley’s PhD research on Dartmoor’s Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, the answer was simple: knit them. 👉 shorturl.at/d2LtL

Moss-clad temperate rainforest regenerating along a Dartmoor river valley. Old uncoppiced hazels, gnarled willows, valley mires, Elf Cup lichens, & a purple-green Parrot Waxcap. Some of Dartmoor’s best habitats are on its edges, where grazing has reduced & nature has bounced back

Dartmoor's missing cattle. For over a decade, there's been a well-funded plan to tackle the poor condition of Dartmoor's central blanket bogs. And to deal with the dominance of Purple Moor Grass.

So why does it remain in such poor condition?

4/ Dartmoor Nature Alliance is campaigning to double the area of rainforests across Dartmoor’s commons.

This would mean going further - letting woods like Black-a-Tor Copse to spread, but also restoring rainforest where none currently survives.

100% of Dartmoor's area is within the Freeport/SEZ outer boundary.
