There is no doubt that health minister Esperance Luvindao is passionate about integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into public healthcare. And that is commendable. Over the past three months, she has championed the use of AI in health facilities and ambulances, creating a picture of a more efficient, data-driven health system. While such a vision is inspiring, it must not come at the expense of addressing the basics. There is limited value in promoting AI ambulances while patients wait in long queues, struggle to find basic medication, or are forced to buy their own medicines. While leaping into the future, the foundations of the present must be secured. AI should enhance healthcare – not distract from fixing what is already broken. Patients with hematologic malignancies and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (HSCT) are at high risk of central venous catheter-related bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Global actions have encouraged patient empowerment as a strategy to reduce these infections. We aim to evaluate the impact of patient empowerment in reducing the incidence density (ID) of CLABSI.
