And the DataViews mention is a good point - why not just wait until that's ready at this point, instead of shifting the UI twice? It must feel that far off.

I am lost in the world of Obsidian plugins right now. either this is going to be my favorite app of all time or I’m going to spend 1000 hours getting it perfectly set up, with perfect YAML and dashboards and dataviews, and then abandon it forever

Paid for Catalyst today because of bases - I have a similar setup as you do here for films, except with video games, so this is incredibly powerful for my setup.
Also was able to promptly removed half-baked dataviews I had that, and took a fraction of the time to set them up in bases.
Amazing.

for personal vault i use Dataviews, but it's not that necessary for my case.
for worldbuilding vault i use Metabind. i just stumbled upon one add-on that looks amazing if you just get started in obsidian. although it looks nothing like a plain md notes 😂 and it's too late in my case so i didnt try.

actually, not all object allocations are expensive. e.g. for readUInt32BE I create a UInt32Array to read the result into, and that's fine. creating DataViews in particular is expensive, and I don't know why. I've no idea what the DataView constructor does that's so costly

If you use Obsidian, you can make notes for each of the artists you WANT to follow (but can't, for bandwidth reasons) and document their bsky, FA handles, etc.
Then you make a summary note with a dataviews that generate links to their galleries and periodically click on em.
