David, F., Cheval, J. (1959). Arbre Historique de la France. The two cartouches have been overlaid (each 50% opacity) to visualize the clustering of armaments and other militarily situated paraphernalia. From the original image described as: "A large decorative broadside represents the history of France in a shape of a tree, starting with six tribes, that formed the French nation. Each branch represents one French royal line with most notable events in the shape of leaves. The last events on the leaves on the upper right-hand side are dated in 1859 under Napoleon III. Our example appears to be slightly later imprint with faded lithographed lines and the coloring is made with crude stencils. The other examples we could trace on the marked had clearer lines and leaves coloured in details." (Alexander Johnson/Dasa Pahor, 2024)

(Facsimile of Behaim's Globe). https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/s7q969 Martin Behaim's Erdapfel (earth apple) is the oldest surviving terrestrial globe. It exists in only one manuscript copy painted by Georg Glockendon, held Nuremberg, Germany. It shows the world according to Ptolemy and other sources, before the discovery of America by Columbus in the same year as the globe was made, 1492. Behaim's globe vividly shows the earth without America and illustrates why Columbus thought he could sail directly west from Europe and land in China and the East Indies. This facsimile of Behaim's globe gores and callots was made by E.G. Ravenstein in 1908 and is generally considered the best available facsimile. It is based on both the original globe and an earlier facsimile made in 1847 by E.F.Jomard, as well as other sources for the notes and place names. While it is by no means a completely faithful copy of the original, it does express the overall intent of Behaim's globe. We have georeferenced the 12 globe gores and 2 polar callots, allowing the reprojection of the 14 separate sections into continuous world maps on several different projections. This mosaic was created from the Magellan Full resolution Basic Image Data Records (F-BIDRs), the highest resolution radar images of the Venus surface (~75 meters per pixel [m]). To make this product, the F-BIDR is assembled into Full-Resolution Mosaicked Image Data Records (F-MIDRs) which are then averaged in successive operations resulting in each pixel being the average of nine pixels resulting in compressed BIDR or C-BIDR. The resulting C-BIDR are then mosaicked into 8192 x 8192 arrays called C1-MIDR (Compressed Once - Mosaicked Image Data Record) which are then further compressed into C2- and C3-MIDR.

New? #DavidRumseyMapCollection adds AI-Generated Summary to the MEDIA INFORMATION section. Not sure if AI is an in-house adaption drawing together Rumsey metadata. Or an outside source pulling info. from the web (e.g. the detail you find on map auction/sellers webpages) tinyurl.com/4pafucy4
Zoomed out [portion] of map showing the full extent of the AI Generated Summary for Blaeu, Willem Janszoon (1621) map titled: Pascaarte van alle de Zecusten van Europa. Nieulycx beschreven door Willem Ians Blauw. AI-Generated Summary: The image depicts "Pascaarte van alle de Zecusten van Europa," a notable sea chart by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, crafted in 1621. This chart is a significant example of Dutch Baroque cartography and measures 85 cm in width and 71 cm in height. It was originally published by Blaeu himself and is classified as a chart map. Composition and Medium: The chart is crafted with meticulous detail, showcasing the coastlines of Europe, parts of North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. It was printed on vellum, a material known for its durability, which was essential for its use aboard ships. The map's rough condition and edge holes suggest it was once nailed to a ship's pilothouse table for navigational reference.
