Margined calligrapher fly sampling Asiatic dayflower pollen. One of my favorite pics from late summer/fall.

Whelp, I finally got moved to another server and will start posting more regularly soon. Still recovering from back surgery but things seem to be […]

[Original post on mastodon.social]
Margined calligraphy fly (seems likely) feeding on the yellow pollen on an anther of an Asiatic dayflower. The fly is standing on the flower's protruding and downward facing stamens while gathering pollen on the anthers with its abdomen pointed up, its head pointing down, and its wing extended on either side. The wings are at an angle to the incoming light, and the typically clear wings flash a rainbow of colors due to refraction. Asiatic dayflowers have two "true" blue vertical petals above the flower's center and one, smaller, horizontal white petal below. They have a green spathe or sheathing that supports from below and encloses the flower interior. The flower has three, long infertile white stamens with brown anthers, three shorter, fertile blue stamens with yellow and maroon anthers, and a white pistil. The dayflower is a small and roughly ½ - 1" wide. Margined calligraphy flies (a species of hover fly) have gold and brown-black striped and marked abdomen, a brown-black thorax with gold sides, a gold head that is mostly made up of two, large, brown compound eyes, two small antennae, six gold and brown segmented legs, and two transparent wings with dark veining.

One of the last wildflowers blooming here as the weather cools, the Common Dayflower (Commelina communis) is a hardy introduction. Also known as the Asiatic Dayflower, reflecting its origin.

Common Dayflower (Commelina communis), which has three petals like our native Virginia Dayflower (Commelina virginica), but the third petal at the bottom is vestigial, being small and colorless.

"I'm So Blue"
This incredibly blue flower is common on our greenbelt. The blue is really this intense; I had to dial the saturation back! And, the yellow also leaps out at you. It's a tiny flower that packs a colorful punch.

An intensely blue white mouth dayflower shot just before dawn in Katy, Texas. The flower is close to the deeply shaded ground cover. Taken with Pentax K3 III and Pentax 100mm macro ED AW. ISO 3200 for 1/250 at f9.

If you're curious about the color, is the dayflower Blue (G863) from Holbein's Irodori gouache. I really love that shade of blue even though it has some white on it.

Did I mention that I love to research about pigment numbers in my watercolors/gouache palette?

Beauty found along the horse trails in Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois mid-September. Find the one item that does not belong here.
Asiatic Dayflower (Commelina communis), a variety of spiderwort found growing on rock at the head of Hayes Canyon in Shawnee National Forest September 15, 2026. Lovely white mushroom decorated with pink grows beside a moss covered log in southern Illinois. Yes, I know what the pink design looks like now that I've looked at the picture a little closer. Moss and lichen beside a walking trail to a natural beauty spot in Shawnee National Forest. This is why I keep plastic grocery bags in my saddlebags. Beautiful ferns line a horse trail in Shawnee National Forest, but for some people, they must feel more comfortable and at home if there is also human trash.

ツユクサ。朝咲いて昼に萎む様子を日が昇るにつれて消えゆく朝露に例えて露草。で、英名もその日限りの花の意でdayflowerなんだな。
Asiatic dayflower (Commelina communis). The Japanese name tsuyukusa means “dew grass,” perhaps inspired by how its blossoms appear in the morning and fade by midday, like dew vanishing with the sun.
