Hardened daylighting is like a parking enforcement officer you don't have to pay.
Daylighting intersections isn’t enough. You have to “harden” the daylighting to prevent vehicles from occupying the space. Otherwise, you are just replacing cars with delivery trucks.

Daylighting is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve pedestrian safety. Come on, New York. If other cities can do this, we can too. "Starting July 1, Sacramento began ticketing cars parked within 20 feet of intersections..."

This Coca Cola truck is parked illegally in the daylighting at this intersection. Had I been 2 seconds ahead this cab driver making a blind turn without yielding would have killed me.

"Hardened daylighting" is a proven and effective vision zero countermeasure.
Just awful. My heart goes out to this person and this woman, her family, friends, and community.
Everyone should be able to safely get to where they need to to.
Hard to know without more info, but a bike/scooter corner corral here might have been sufficient to slow the turning driver.

A few minutes ago, Divvy installed a new station at Inner Lake Shore Dr & Aldine Ave next to a busy underpass to the lakefront. The station was intentionally positioned to help calm traffic and improve safety for pedestrians crossing Inner Lake Shore Drive. Really excited about this one!

THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE, FRIEND MUSEUM. IT IS DAYLIGHTING AND THEN FILLING THE DAYLIGHTED SPACE WITH SOMETHING USEFUL THAT ALSO PREVENTS CARS FROM OCCUPYING THE SPACE OR MAKING FASTER TURNS. THIS IS THE ONLY KIND OF DAYLIGHTING THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.

Unfortunately, I don't see any mention of "hardened" daylighting. Without this, daylighting can actually reduce safety.
This study by NYCDOT found that hardened daylighting makes intersections safer. But daylighting without bike racks, rocks, plantings, curb bulbs, or green stormwater infrastructure—added to prevent cars from parking or taking faster turns—actually makes the intersection more dangerous.
