I like this use of “brick” to describe a good person.

From Daniel Deronda by George Eliot - a very apt quote for today's political landscape!:
"It is a common sentence that Knowledge is power; but who hath duly considered or set forth the power of Ignorance? Knowledge slowly builds up what Ignorance in an hour pulls down."

Royal purple Clematis ‘Daniel Deronda’ looking smashing with yellow Lonicera sempervirens ‘John Clayton’. A perfect color combo for #ClematisThursday.

I found my word of the day--"wherry"-- in George Elliot's Daniel Deronda.

It means: "A light rowing-boat used chiefly on rivers to carry passengers and goods."

I had never heard it in Canada before.

l finished Daniel Deronda—and with it, my journey through all of George Eliot's novels. Since January 2024, I've been reading them chronologically. Each book has felt like stepping into a world at once brimming with intellect and alive with feeling. An appreciation: www.instagram.com/p/DNjvL8QAH5...

"For what is love itself, for the one we love best? — an enfolding of immeasurable cares which yet are better than any joys outside our love."

This is a funny sentence in George Eliot's Daniel Deronda if you think of a thong as "a skimpy garment," which I did at first.

"The truth ... came like a lacerating thong"

But thong didn't mean "a skimpy garment" until long after Daniel Deronda was published.

I found my word of the day--"scapegrace"--in George Elliot's Daniel Deronda.

A person of reckless habits, who "escapes" the grace of God.

But it's often used playfully, as in this sentence from Thackery:

"He was the most charming young scapegrace in the army"

All is not lost in the meantime as I “have” to read A Room of One’s Own and Daniel Deronda for work.

I realise that this is not the most momentous news of the day, but I’ve just finished reading Daniel Deronda. Need to take thought. And also read a biography of George Eliot.

Closing in on the end of Daniel Deronda and this book just gets wilder and more modern with each chapter. Incredible. All hail late style.
