With the popularity of Atlanta United, Atlanta’s selection as a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city, and its role as the new home for the U.S. Soccer Federation headquarters, it’s clear Atlanta has soccer on the brain. Things will heat up even more this weekend when Decatur FC, a semi-professional women’s soccer team, begins its second season on May 23.

Decatur FC defeated another Southeast Conference rival with a 2-0 win over the United Futbol Academy (UFA) Gunners on May 30. The win continues an undefeated streak for Decatur FC this season. The team is ranked first in the Southeast Conference of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

Whether they’re pursuing a professional soccer contract, training for the upcoming collegiate season, or returning to the field after graduation, players join Decatur FC in the summer for various reasons. This Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) is mostly made up of college soccer stars, but the team also includes a few college graduates like Smith Cathey from Georgia Southern University and Sydnie Thibodaux from Auburn University.

Decatur FC beat AFU 5-2 at AFU's home field at Pinecrest Academy in Cumming. From the get go, the team's strong passing and communication enabled them to control the game and keep the ball on the attacking half of the field.
