Bonus Decult Episode - Aaron Strong ex Pentecostal
Decult 2026 will be here next month. We are lucky enough to talk to the conference's very first speaker Aaron Strong.Aaron Sharp is a psychologist and former member of high-control Pentecostal churches. He became involved with the Potter’s House Christian Fellowship at around 15 years of age and remained within high-control Pentecostal environments for approximately 25 years. After leaving in his early 40s, he began the difficult process of rebuilding his identity, beliefs and direction in life. In 2016, he began studying psychology at university and went on to complete postgraduate training in professional and clinical psychology. He is now a registered psychologist completing the Clinical Psychology Registrar Program in Australia. His professional interests include religious trauma, coercive control and recovery from high-control groups. Aaron also speaks publicly about his own experience of indoctrination, leaving, and rebuilding a life after religion. In 2026, he is speaking at the DECULT Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand, about his journey into, through and out of high-control religion.DECULT 2026 speaker profile: https://decult.net/speaker/aaron-sharp/New Directions Psychology: https://www.newdirectionspsychology.com.au/

Anke Richter, Part 2 - Harem Culture, Leaving ISTA, and DeCult
This week is part 2 with Anke Richter, journalist, author of Cult Trip, former member of Tantric group ISTA, and founder and director of New Zealand’s cult conference DeCult. In part 2 with Anke, she explains how the founder of International School of Temple Arts had constructed a sort of harem culture and was sleeping with all the women, where the line is between normal dating in a community vs. coercion, and how her journalistic investigation into a different tantra group while still actively in this one finally set off her alarm bells. They discuss what’s positive about the tantric world, how the flip side of sex-positive groups can be a pressure to act sex positive when you don’t actually FEEL sex positive, and why she started cult conference Decult. Anke Richter, Part 1 - Ecstatic Dancing, Tantric Sex, and Joining ISTA
Today is part 1 with Anke Richter, journalist, author of Cult Trip, former member of Tantric group International School of Temple Arts, and founder and director of New Zealand’s cult conference DeCult. In this week’s episode she shares how she began as a journalist investigating cults, but when she went to a tantric sex festival, she had a peak experience with ecstatic dancing that made her never want to go back to her old way of life. She’ll talk about doing her first training in tantric pleasure, which got her deeper into ISTA and the idea of tantric polarity and exploring her feminine energy that she’d felt she’d been missing, and how the intensity and the highs she felt in these communities made real life seem boring. Plus, how there often aren’t a lot of sexual communities to choose from in general, which can create room for the sketchier ones to flourish. Recovery is a long process that requires time and space to re-evaluate beliefs and rebuild identity. A therapist who specializes in deprogrammed recovery can provide a safe space to process experiences and heal from manipulation endured. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 29, 2026 at 7:35 PM
Leaving a high-control group can leave a person without a social network, job, or even a place to live. Offer help with things like finding a new job, housing, or educational qualifications. Be patient with their recovery. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 28, 2026 at 7:35 PM
When and if your loved one decides to leave, they will need immense support. Prepare a safe exit plan. Cults often try to pull former members back in. Have a plan that addresses their housing, finances, and emotional needs. Provide practical support. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 27, 2026 at 7:34 PM
Encourage them to think for themselves. Ask open-ended questions in a curious, non-confrontational tone. "How's the group helped you, have there been any downsides?""I heard a prediction that didn't come true, what're your thoughts""What do you love most?" Point out inconsistencies. (ICSA / DECULT)

I can't wait to attend #Decult2026! Sadly, not all cult survivors can afford to attend this amazing conference, so we would love it if you could donate to the #DecultScholarshipFund. We're aiming to hit $10k this week. @decult.bsky.social
Help us raise $10k for survivors this month
This June, we’re raising NZ$10,000 to help cult-affected New Zealanders who can’t afford to attend Decult 2026.

Avoid using loaded terms. Words like "cult," "brainwashed," or "mind control" are red flags that will make your loved one defensive. Instead, use "I feel" statements to share your perceptions without judgment.Ask gentle, thought-provoking questions. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 24, 2026 at 7:32 PM
Prepare for the possibility that your loved one may never leave and decide what boundaries you need to set for yourself. Seek professional help and groups for support. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 22, 2026 at 7:32 PM
Learn about the specific group. Research the group's history and potential abuses. Learning about similar groups and their manipulative tactics can be a gentle way to encourage critical thinking later on. Formulate a plan. Determine your goals and how you will approach conversations. (ICSA / DECULT)
June 21, 2026 at 7:31 PM
Before approaching your loved one, prepare for a difficult + long-term process. Educate yourself on mind control tactics. Cults use methods of thought reform to control (isolation, fear, closed logic systems). Understanding these will help you stay patient. (ICSA / DECULT)
