This is a hands-on training.

Participants will work extensively with qualitative data and learn strategies they can apply to their own research.

The workshop uses Dedoose, but the methods are applicable across qualitative analysis software.

I use the free qualCoder for basic coding. It's not perfect, but free and perfectly usable for standard coding tasks.
I'm not aware of any major commercial tool that you can just buy. MaxQDA is the commercial tool people are least likely to hate. Dedoose is most reasonably priced imo

I also reviewed the transcript for accuracy, downloaded the recording and the edited transcript. Uploaded new data to Dedoose. Saved a backup of all data to my external drive.

That's enough adulting.

tonight, though, tonight I need to figure out if I have an active subscription to Dedoose still. And then I need to tackle some laundry.

So. Good news, I guess. My subscription to Dedoose, previously paid for by my former-PI's start-up grant who has now left the university, is still active. I cannot see the billing information for my account so I have no idea how long it'll be active for (surprise!)

And! I have successfully uploaded the first few bits of data into Dedoose. If only things worked this well in general. (I will need to relearn much of this program but this is significant progress)

I am working on an OER text on qual & quant data analysis designed for undergrads, w/ conceptual chapters & how-tos in Dedoose & SPSS. If anyone is interested in pilot-testing in spring, or contributing how-tos for other software, be in touch (email is better).

If you decide to do a thematic analysis, let me know so I can boot up Dedoose...then run away screaming before I get involved in that.
There is a certain calm to be found in dealing with quantitative data.

dedoose is not bad — we considered it and attended some info/training sessions but some members of our team felt it was too complicated and seemed to like atlas.ti as a tool, so we’re doing that. but I’m looking deeper to see if we should stick with dedoose re: genAI stuff.

I think it depends on the number of people involved in coding your data, and the amount of data.

I tend to agree that for anything small-medium data wise and 1-3 people excel is often simplest.

Dedoose is great for more people and more data

Ditto Dedoose! They are also fairly responsive when I've had questions, and agree with others it's easy to use for collaboration.

In addition you will also need a good reference for the type of analysis you are doing (thematic analysis, discourse analysis, grounded theory, etc)

Join scholars from the Institute for Mixed Methods Research for the “Map your Method” webinar series, discussing best practices for thematic analysis in Dedoose: dedoose.info/apr22

This session guides you through strategies for identifying, analyzing, and interpreting patterns in qualitative data.
