Science often faces a choice:

Build models primarily designed to predict, or models that compactly explain. But what if we used them in synergy?

Our paper tackles this head-on. We combine a deep network (DeepGaze III) with an interpretable mechanistic model (SceneWalk).

A gaze that holds secrets.

Learning about Deepgaze vs Chatgpt is so goddamn funny lmao

This is now a different thread but I think it’s a slight misunderstanding. I’m not saying pure prediction is the way to go. I’m saying pure prediction can also yield useful models. I was using DeepGaze as an example. Call it a tool, if you like. 1/2

There is potentially an interesting step in between statistical models (e.g. deepgaze) and the "right" minimal causal models (taking all the constraints into account). These would be over-parameterized causal models that predict the right consequences of all possible interventions.

This can simply mean using DNNs as a tool. For example, you can build a tool like DeepGaze that predicts where people will look. This doesn't explain *why* humans look at some things. But it is useful for exploring novel predictions about saccades before testing them. 3/n
