Did a trail run on Highlands Trail from SR89A to Kachina Wetlands. Saw some wildflowers that I haven't seen elsewhere this year. Nice. And got to see an osprey flying over the ponds.

As part of my journey in native plants 🌱, I have really gotten into trying to find and propagate native legumes.

This is Hosackia crassifolia, aka big deervetch. I didn't scarify the seeds. Only one germinated!

Those big legume seeds - either they germinate right away or need scratching!

A honeybee forages nectar from Common Bird's-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), Myndd Mawr, 2nd May 2025 🐝. Also called eggs and bacon and birdsfoot deervetch in English and Pys-y-ceirw (literally "deers hoof") in Welsh, the plant has a folklore association as a protective charm.

Here we have Lotus corniculatus [common bird’s-foot trefoil//eggs and bacon//birdsfoot deervetch//bird’s-foot trefoil]. Normally I focus on the science but I had to know what on earth was up with “eggs and bacon.” Apparently it used to be “butter and eggs” (because yellow) and morphed. Bacon??!
