Adela Tejero Bedate (known as Delhy Tejero) painted this self portrait in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War when she was 33. The close-up portrait of her head and shoulders, done with subtle brushstrokes and variations in color intensity, allows us to focus on Tejero’s thoughtful and introspective expression. She is slightly turned towards the us, with her gaze directed off to her left. A simple, light-colored top adds to the overall sense of simplicity and grace. Her distinctive beauty with expressive almond eyes, a gentle curve to her pink lips, and a noticeable nose bridge are complemented by her short, dark hair styled in a fashion common to the era. The muted, light grayish-green color background creates a natural contrast with the Tejero’s darker features while the lighting is evenly distributed, suggesting a soft natural light source that illuminates her face without harsh shadows to draw our attention to her emotions and personality.
