Before, I used to call Dera’s clone “Tsundere Dera” or “Tsundera,” but that’s not something the characters would actually call her.

The loss of Dera's facial hair still stings but at least he still looks nice in the show (nicer than that full-body preview art).

An investigation in 2000 determined that 16 of the stage's pillars (the largest is 13m tall and 2.3m wide) were created from 400 year old zelkova trees.
To prepare for future restoration work the temple planted 6000 trees in 3 areas. They will not be touched for 400 years!

Kūya would perform on the 6 unlucky days of each month, known as 'Rokusai' (六斎日 - 8/14/15/23/29/last day). Because of this the dance became known as Rokusai Nembutsu (六斎念仏).
The first reference to these unlucky days is in 691, detailed in the Nihon Shoki (日本書紀).

🐗🙏1000 BOARS HELP FOUND A TEMPLE📿🐗

Known affectionately as 'Matsu-no-dera' (松の寺 the 'Temple of the Pine'), Yoshimine-dera (善峯寺) is the 20th of 33 temples on the famed Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage (西国三十三所).
It is a famous spot for enjoying hydrangea in early summer, and the fall colours.

14) Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺)🪂🙏

'To Jump Off the Stage at Kiyomizu' (清水の舞台から飛び降りる) is similar to the expression 'To Take the Plunge'.
The temple was founded in 778 by Enchin (延鎮), a Nara novice who settled here after searching for a golden river he had seen in a dream.

Otowa's waters are known variously as Konjiki-sui (金色水 'golden water'), Enmei-sui (延命水 'life-prolonging water') and Hachikudoku-sui (八功徳水 'water of the 8 virtuous deeds').

Since Heian times people have believed that the waters will remove any bad karma.

On the east side of Kiyomizu-dera's main hall, on a beam below the latticed shutters, is a long, deep scratch (堂々巡り筋痕).
It was created by the countless rosary beads rubbed against the wood so that worshippers could feel their way around the hall in the dark.

8) JIZŌ🔥

Yata-dera (矢田寺).
In 820 Mankei (満慶) was asked to administer the Bodhisattva Precepts to Enma, the King of Hell (閻魔大王). On a tour of the underworld he met Jizō who told him to take soil back home and create a Jizō statue to ease the suffering of those in hell.

The original pagoda was deliberately burnt in 1179 during one of the many skirmishes between the monks of Yasaka-jinja (八坂神社) and Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺).

Rebuilt in 1191 by Minamoto-no-Yoritomo (源頼朝), the temple began to fall into permanent decline from this point.

The kanji “kuma” (熊), meaning “bear,” was chosen today, Dec. 12, as the character that best represents 2025 at Kyoto’s iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Kiyomizu-dera’s chief priest wrote the character with a giant brush after it received the most votes: 23,346 out of 189,112.

(Fun detail: at this moment, Yuru has successfully deduced that Dera potentially has new information about his parents. Shou Tucker's line from the TV is spoken uninterrupted - "I hate perceptive brats like you." - serving as Dera's unspoken response to Yuru's insistent badgering.)

As the service coincided with 'Mantō Kuyō' (万灯供養), when votive lights were offered to the dead at Obon, that evening Kūya led the 600 monks in a lantern procession that wound up into the old crematory ground.

It is said the memory of this event later inspired the Okuribi.

3) 堂々巡り📿

"Circling the temple hall" is similar to the English phrase "Going around in circles". It is yet another idiom born at Kiyomizu-dera.
Pilgrims would circle the main hall, often many hundreds of times, as an act of faith.
