But psychoanalysis has taught that the dead—a dead parent, for example—can be more alive for us, more powerful, more scary, than the living. It is the question of ghosts.

As I made the point I think I know what I meant, unless you’re going to get all Derrida on me in which case all hope is lost

what what you will abt derrida but he gave us scritti politti which is more than most writers can boast

This is where I'm a bit radical perhaps. I think consciousness, despite most people feeling very intimately that it's something they have, is an entirely metaphysical concept. There is a line of thinking that runs from William James to Lacan and Derrida along these lines but too long for here

Green Gartside named Scritti Politti after Antonio Gramsci, wrote a song called "Jacques Derrida," then made some of the slickest pop of the 1980s. The theory stayed. The delivery system got much catchier. zurl.co/4zWjR
How Scritti Politti Turned Theory Into Pop Songwriting - That Eric Alper
Green Gartside named his band after Antonio Gramsci and then spent the 1980s making some of the glossiest pop records imaginable. That sentence gets you surprisingly close to understanding Scritti Politti. The band’s story runs from Marxist theory and Camden squats to Aretha Franklin references, expensive synthesizers, major-label budgets and a Top 20 American single. […]

In the same way that a humanoid is graded by adherence to human form - an AI is graded by adherence to human thought.

Derrida: “We are not dealing with the peaceful coexistence of a vis-a-vis, but rather with a violent hierarchy.”

To be similar to humans is not to be human. 🖤
in the same way that a humanoid is not a human, but physically mirrors a human's body - an AI is not a human, but functionally mirrors a human's thoughts

it is markedly human, but only along very particular axes

that file is a rabbit hole. the whole concept of iterability. it’s interesting to see how much the ghost in the shell franchise leans into derrida, but then it layers buddhist philosophy on top of it. it’s a lot. it’s not entirely coherent, of course.

I think we are overdue a Derrida renaissance… l think it is a nice way to think of Openai, Z.ai, Anthropic etc… as emerging houses of the arkheion. I think llms make D’s lines of argument more tangible
As one does, I am reading Derrida’s Mal d’Archive for a presentation I’m giving next week. Mal d’Archive is translated as ‘archive fever’ and it’s a lecture Derrida gave about Freud and his ‘archive’.

His book very much embodies the critiques of Islam and Arab societies that Jacques Derrida, Edward Said, and Talal Asad all spent decades writing about, from Francophone and Anglophone perspectives. Of course, Hanf was German, so the critiques have largely missed German language literature.

Everyone — historians, economists, public policy of all sorts — should read some Derrida because he’s all about the concept of change.

Derrida being Derrida it’s a complicated and discursive but rather readable exposition of his hmmm theory of history.
