With recent news that 40% of Earth's land habitats are now categorised as drylands, the capacity of solar farms to prevent desertification seems doubly significant.
Very interesting piece by Xiaoying You in Carbon Brief about the additional benefit from solar in China's desert areas: pushing back the desert. Physical barriers against sand movement, reducing wind-borne sand, more moisture retention, and more.

China’s effort to build large solar power “bases” in and around the desert is a major part of its current renewable plan.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

Apparently this photo of mine is currently on display at the Australian Embassy in Berlin (yeah, Berlin, go figure) as part of an Everyday Climate Crisis Exhibition. I took it between Renmark and Mildura in Dec 2019 during extreme drought conditions. An example of desertification.

cheap desalination and bio-engineering vegetation to reverse desertification also seems doable and valuable?

1/ The occupied regions of Ukraine are facing a deepening ecological and economic crisis, with critical shortages of water, rapid desertification, and the collapse of agriculture and industries across the occupied territories. Russia is doing little to resolve it. ⬇️

Another way of putting this: Disgusted, broken-hearted WaPo journalists can't just "jump ship." The whole fleet is sinking. There are honest jobs, but 100 good reporters for each one, even as the news desertification of America rages like wildfire. Solidarity demands we acknowledge the situation.
