Unsheltered fellow human in the entry alcove to the old Dignity Health Urgent Care office. I did my CNA internship with Dignity Health at St. Mary's, so this now vacant space has a many degrees of meaning. It's difficult leaving a tough night of work as a caregiver, only to walk the street and immediately be confronted with countless in "urgent" and obvious need of care. merDUH!!! 😭

Off the bus this morning from work, again a remarkable sight as I crossed the street... In nearly the same spot as yesterday, directly in front of Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist San Francisco, an unsheltered couple is resting under a white sheet, their belongings neatly placed around them.

As I turned the corner from my bus stop to my apartment this morning, I saw across Geary and up the alleyway, this sort of shroud billowing in the chilly (49F) morning breeze. There are two people asleep behind the white sheet. This is one of at least a dozen similar scenes around my 4 block radius. How does an unsheltered fellow citizen go from the street into housing? What jobs could they apply for and afford not only rent, but healthcare, food, etc.? Do the math, friends, process what this means, and what you can do to be an agent of compassion and change. Volunteer, donate, vote, protest, give to the individual, say hello and acknowledge them. Because they are us. The overwhelming majority of us are a paycheck away from homelessness. View from my 38R bus this morning, O'Farrell and Van Ness stop. There's an exceptional homeless encampment in front of Tesla San Francisco. Two ghostly people are shrouded in white sheets, both together sitting on the exterior ledge of the showroom. An old MAC computer monitor, a pair of bright red sneakers, and a group of light up letters (which are actually somehow lit) make up the scene on the sidewalk around them. Behind them there's a clear view of the showroom, including the latest Tesla models and an Optimus robot. It's such a surreal and jarring contrast, the scene almost seems staged, almost.

A man lying on his back on the sidewalk over an air-conditioning vent from the Clift Hotel, near my apartment. It blasts warm air 24/7. There are frequently unsheltered people laying on top of it, especially during colder times like today with a high of 55F. My alley tonight with ~5 unsheltered lying on the sidewalk in front of the Vet's Alley murals. Temperature at the time, ~46F.

Thanksgiving eve in front of John's Grill, San Francisco, a man hunched over motionless in a wheelchair, apparently passed out, both legs heavily bandaged from the knees down including his feet, no shoes. A van from North East Medical Services coincidentally parked behind him creates a jarring backdrop. I saw workers nearby from SF HOT (Homeless Outreach Team) and they said they would go and check on him. There's an orangey yellow discoloration on parts of his bandages. Either his wounds are draining and/or it's iodine antiseptic, my guess. No matter, he's no doubt in a lot of pain and shouldn't be on the street. Living out in the elements, without consistent wound care, he'll almost certainly become septic at some point, possibly needing amputation, or even die.

A 30 something man sitting on top of Clift Hotel's sidewalk air-conditioning vents. Warm air blasts from it 24/7. The streets are still wet from last night's/this morning's rain. There's a major Microsoft convention in town, I imagine those are attendees in the background walking towards him. This is my neighborhood. I came back the same way 30 minutes later and he was gone. 🙏

A ghostly figure sleeping under a blanket in the alcove of a closed restaurant, along Divisadero directly in front of UCSF Mt. Zion main entrance A shoeless guy seemingly passed out on the sidewalk bordering UCSF Mt. Zion. He's on top of a vent, warm air was blowing up, likely exhaust from UCSF. I've seen this before, people resting on top of vents, seeking warmth. It's mid 50s° in San Francisco this morning. The scene was alarming. I did go check on him, gave him a nudge, worried maybe a fentanyl situation. I'm trained and carry Narcan. He was alert. I offered him a glazed donut in my bag from work. He was accepting and thankful. His head and upper body were covered under his jacket, just a hand emerged and took the donut. Off the bus this morning, on my alley, Vet's Alley, someone under a blanket with Amos's "We the People" mural behind.
