The Armed Forces of Ukraine have received German-made ground robots developed by ARX Robotics and DEUTZ. The systems, assembled in Germany just 12 weeks after the launch of joint production, are expected to be manufactured in greater numbers in the coming months. German companies ARX Robotics and DEUTZ supplied Ukraine’s Defense Forces with the first batch of GEREON ground robotic systems, ARX Robotics said in a press release. The systems were built at the DEUTZ plant in Ulm, Germany. According to the company, this delivery is part of a larger contract, and production volumes will be increased in the near future. The new robots will add to Ukraine’s GEREON fleet, which is already operating on the frontline. ARX Robotics said this is the largest fleet of ground robotic systems of Western origin currently in service in Ukraine. The company reported that GEREON’s specifications allow it to transport both cargo and ammunition weighing up to 500 kilograms (about 1,100 pounds) over distances of up to 40 kilometers. Under the partnership, ARX Robotics is responsible for system design, software and integration, while DEUTZ provides manufacturing capacity and industrial scaling expertise. “Europe’s armed forces need thousands of unmanned ground systems on very short timelines to be effective in today’s environment of threats. Europe has both the technological innovation and industrial base to meet this need. The question is how fast we can move new technologies from development to production, and ultimately, into military use,” said Mark Witfeld, co-founder and CEO of ARX Robotics. ARX Robotics was founded in 2022 and employs 300 people in Munich, Berlin, London and Kyiv. DEUTZ, established in 1864 in Cologne, is regarded as the world’s oldest engine manufacturer. Ground robots are increasingly being used for the most dangerous frontline tasks. Recently, one of Ukraine’s mechanized brigades used an amphibious ground robotic system in a logistics operation, with the vehicle covering more than 40 kilometers by land and water. Manufacturing for Ukraine’s armed forces is expanding among other partners as well. In the Netherlands, production of 150 THeMIS robots for Ukraine has begun, while near Munich, serial production of more than 5,000 attack drones for Ukraine is now underway.
