UTMB 2026 : l'Apple Watch Ultra reste sur la ligne de départ
L’Apple Watch Ultra 3 aurait pu terminer l’UTMB au poignet de Ben Dhiman, mais de justesse et à condition d’activer le mode économie d’énergie. Apple promet jusqu’à 20 heures d’entraînement avec une activité complète du GPS et du capteur cardiaque, tandis que l’Américain a bouclé son tour du Mont-Blanc en 18 heures et 16 minutes. En mode normal, limité à 14 heures d’exercice en extérieur, la montre aurait rendu les armes bien avant lui. Ben Dhiman a franchi la ligne plus d’une heure avant le chrono réalisé par Tom Evans l’année dernière. La comparaison est d’autant plus pertinente que les deux éditions se sont disputées sur des parcours très similaires : comme en 2025, le passage par les Pyramides Calcaires a été supprimé en raison des conditions météorologiques. Le tracé n’était toutefois pas rigoureusement identique, ce qui empêche de considérer son temps de 18 h 16 min 29 s comme un record officiel, sans retirer grand-chose à la performance. © UTMB® Franck Oddoux Malheureusement pour Apple, le vainqueur ne portait pas une Ultra, mais une Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra. Image © UTMB® Franck Oddoux Pas une Pomme à l’horizon Comme chaque année, le blog Montre Cardio GPS a analysé les montres utilisées pendant l’UTMB, en se concentrant sur les 30 premiers hommes et les 20 premières femmes. Sur cet échantillon de 50 athlètes, 44 modèles ont pu être identifiés et 38 traces GPS récupérées. Le constat reste identique à celui de l’année dernière : aucune Apple Watch ne figure parmi les modèles identifiés. Les partenariats commerciaux jouent évidemment un rôle important à ce niveau. Ces données donnent donc davantage une photographie du sponsoring chez les élites qu’un état fidèle du marché des montres sportives. Chez les hommes, Garmin équipe 37 % des trente premiers, contre 33 % pour Coros. Les deux marques font également la course en tête chez les femmes, devant Suunto, partenaire technique de l’UTMB. Amazfit reste moins représentée, mais la marque a eu le nez creux en recrutant Ben Dhiman après avoir déjà accompagné la victoire de Ruth Croft l’année dernière. Les vieilles font de la résistance Les nouveautés ne sont pas nécessairement celles qui ont la cote. Coros est pratiquement la seule marque chez laquelle les coureurs ont massivement adopté une génération récente, avec plusieurs APEX 4. Chez Garmin et Suunto, des modèles âgés de trois à sept ans restent largement utilisés : Fenix 6X et 6 Pro de 2019, Fenix 7, Forerunner 955 et Enduro 2 de 2022, ou encore Forerunner 965, Suunto Race et Vertical de 2023. Chez les hommes, on ne trouve ni Fenix 8 Pro ni Forerunner 970, mais une Forerunner 255 au poignet de Drew Holmen, douzième de la course. Cette montre lancée en 2022 annonce 30 heures d’autonomie, ce qui laisse encore une marge confortable à un athlète capable de terminer l’épreuve en moins de 20 heures. Ce conservatisme n’a rien d’étonnant. À ce niveau, mieux vaut s’appuyer sur un matériel éprouvé que découvrir les particularités d’une nouvelle montre au beau milieu de la nuit. L’autonomie maximale n’est d’ailleurs pas nécessairement la priorité des élites, qui bouclent l’UTMB en moins de 24 heures. La légèreté et le confort peuvent peser davantage dans la balance. Pablo Villa, onzième, a ainsi couru avec une Coros PACE Pro, un modèle à 349 € qui ne joue pas le rôle de porte-étendard de la gamme. Ses 31 heures d’autonomie en mode GPS double fréquence sont néanmoins amplement suffisantes pour cet usage. Les écrans AMOLED ne semblent pas davantage indispensables : ils ne représentent toujours qu’un tiers des montres de l’échantillon masculin. La Coros Pace Pro - Image : Coros Pour un amateur visant un chrono proche de 40 heures, l’équation change complètement. La réserve nécessaire réduit le choix et peut imposer un mode GPS moins précis. C’est précisément là que les 20 heures promises par l’Apple Watch Ultra 3 avec un suivi complet montrent leurs limites. Les GPS dans un mouchoir La précision générale continue en revanche de progresser. L’organisation présente un parcours de 173,6 km en tenant compte du relief, tandis que sa mesure en deux dimensions atteint 171,3 km. La moyenne des montres analysées s’établit à 171,2 km. Les écarts entre les marques sont minuscules : 171,73 km pour Garmin, 171,40 km pour Suunto, 170,73 km pour Coros et 170,50 km pour Amazfit. Toutes restent sous la barre de 1 % d’écart, sans qu’il soit possible de désigner sérieusement un vainqueur. Les réglages utilisés par les athlètes ne sont pas connus et toutes les montres n’ont probablement pas fonctionné avec le même mode satellitaire. Les différences sont un peu plus visibles sur le dénivelé positif, annoncé à 9 700 m. Amazfit atteint une moyenne de 9 694 m et Suunto 9 689 m, contre 9 581 m pour Coros. Garmin conserve pour sa part une tendance à la surestimation avec 9 936 m. Si l’Apple Watch Ultra veut s’imposer sur les ultras, il lui faudra une autonomie vraiment ultra (et peut-être quelques athlètes sponsorisés). Espérons que ces deux ingrédients soient au menu de l’Apple Watch Ultra 4.
