Dawkins: Ha ha Philosophy, why didn't you anticipate Darwin?

Dietzgen, Marx, Engels: Er, Dialectical Materialism much?

Dawkins: No, not like that.

A thingy for #thingthursday

It's a Swiss Imperial Map Measure tool. You roll across your map on the little wheel and it measures out inches and feet.

Interesting thread on socialist philosopher Joseph Dietzgen:
Hi G,
Here's my summary:
Joseph Dietzgen was a German philosopher born in 1828. He is mostly known as a socialist philosopher and early proponent of Dialectic logic as was Hegel. Whereas Hegel is famous for being hard to understand, Dietzgen's ideas are clear and straight forward so

'Mind and Matter: Which Is Primary, Which Secondary?' (1887) by Joseph Dietzgen from The Positive Outcome of Philosophy. Charles H. Kerr, Chicago. 1906.

Always a refreshing read, Dietzgen on the monistic view of mind and matter.

"...I think, the terms anarchist, socialist, communist, should be mixed together so that no muddle head could tell which is which. Language serves not only the purpose of distinguishing things, but also of uniting them, for it is dialectic."

Any time I read about auto didactic dialectical materialists like Chernyshevsky or Dietzgen (or Laura Olamina for that matter if we can include fictional characters), it reminds me how god damn obviously true materialist philosophy is and that it's so self-evidently true that so many people...

I bought this neato drafting table when I thought I was moving. Ended up sitting in my garage for a year.

Was about to list it for $150 - what I paid for it.

It turns out it’s an early 1900’s Dietzgen drafting table worth almost 10x that amount.

There will also be opportunists, wreckers, delusional people, Don Quixote type people who think they are Lenin reincarnated, sexual predators, drug fiends, and people who just create drama because they thrive on it.

Just praise Dietzgen and pass the ammunition.

"Dialectical materialism" was coined by Joseph Dietzgen, "historical materialism" comes from Plekhanov, and Marx borrowed "dictatorship of the proletariat" from Joseph Weydemeyer.

The cool thing is that it was independently developed by the self-educated worker Joseph Dietzgen! Marx and Engels discussed his writings in some letter exchanges. Interesting guy

I just finished my analysis of the works of Joseph Dietzgen. I'll be hanging out near his grave on May Day if anyone wants to discuss.

I still have my Dietzgen slide rule (with Teflon grooves!). I keep threatening to put it in a wall case with a glass window and a tiny hammer hanging from a chain, with a sign: In Case of Emergency, Break Glass.
