diffraction spikes? you mean telescope astigmatism?

this is probably one of my favorite hubble images of all time 🌌

My favorite thing about JWST images is all the little spots and smudges in the background (the ones without diffraction spikes) — they’re all distant galaxies 🤩
The Horsehead Nebula “runs for the roses” across the cosmic stage in this new near-infrared view from the James Webb Space Telescope. The extreme close-up focuses on a portion of the horse’s “mane.” Explore the mid-infrared counterpart: webbtelescope.pub/3W6fx4X 🔭 🧪

"What did James Watson discover?"

"Rosalind Franklin's X-ray diffraction slides."
Watson was a racist who, "near the end of his life, faced condemnation and professional censure for offensive remarks, including saying Black people are less intelligent than white people"
James Watson, co-discoverer of the double-helix shape of DNA, has died at age 97
Scientist James Watson, who shared a Nobel prize for helping discover the double-helix shape of the DNA molecule, has died. He was 97.

What happens when you put a snake in shag carpeting with some little soft, bendable posts in the way (and also it can't see the posts).

If you answered: "It behaves like a light particle moving through a diffraction grating" then congratulations! You win!

Let's talk about SNAKE DIFFRACTION.

Yay! Sights like this remind you that despite everything, hate can’t stop the diffraction of electromagnetic radiation from the sun by atmospheric water droplets.

My first diffraction art - "Ribbon of Diffraction", a collaboration with Isaac Newton of sorts :-) I combined my code-generated "ribbon" of diffraction curves with Newton's drawings from his book Opticks (public domain, project Gutenberg, resolution of the drawings is a bit low). #SciArt

Rho Ophiuchi in all its beauty. The closest star forming region to our own planet at 390 light years away.

Brighter stars standing out due to JWST's characteristic pattern of diffraction spikes.

Another one from my series "Sparse Spectral Spaceport" - virtual 3D scupltures from mathematically exact diffraction curves.

Intensity of diffracted light depending on the position (angle). The diffraction grating would be in the center of the structure.
