no wonder tomino was excited about digipaint. the fluidity and motion in these mech scenes is some of the best i've ever seen. the shading and lighting in the backgrounds is amazing. meanwhile sunrise are putting all their money behind the ugliest anime theyve ever made lol

GitS 2: Innocence, however... possibly the most 2004 anime film imaginable. we got digipaint, we got 00's CGI, and we got SO much fucking bloom giving everything that dodge/burn look where the highlights are blown out to shit

While I still squirm at visual design trends in the early digipaint days I still think the aughts are probably my favorite period of anime for the sheer amount of visual and narrative experimentation on display.

Anime is booming in the 00s yet the big three series of this new wave are all early digipaint weekly shonen so of course people flocked to this gorgeous action cartoon that showed a deep love for its influences and wasn't just poorly copying anime's homework.
