Paper records slow Tanzania's digital health push
[DAR ES SALAAM, SciDev.Net] Electronic medical records, aimed at improving patient care, coordination, and efficiency, have become common practice in Tanzanian hospitals. But researchers warn that doubling up with paper records could be costing health workers valuable time and accuracy. A study by researchers from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and the University of Dodoma found that unreliable infrastructure, system failures, and organisational constraints are slowing the full transition to digital records in the country. The researchers say continuous training, better infrastructure, and stronger institutional support is needed to help Tanzania’s primary healthcare facilities ditch their paper records and go fully digital. Published in the Records Management Journal, the study examined electronic medical record use among 41 healthcare professionals across six health facilities in Tanzania’s Iringa Urban and Manyoni districts. The researchers assessed the practical use of the Government of Tanzania Hospital Management Information System (GoT-HoMIS), including access to computers, electricity and internet connections. They examined the challenges healthcare workers face alongside Tanzania’s digital health policies. Training for digital health For Joseph Makaranga, lead author of the study and a lecturer in the Department of Information Systems and Technology at the University of Dodoma, one challenge is...

WHO South Sudan - Voices from the field: Issue #26, 2 November 2026 #Refugees
WHO South Sudan - Voices from the field: Issue #26, 2 November 2026
Country: South Sudan Source: World Health Organization Please refer to the attached file. From Paper Registers to Digital Care: WHO brings digital health closer to remote communities in Tonj North, Warrap State By Riing Yak Ajor, Paulino Kuol Akok, Sokona Sy In the remote and conflict-affected communities of Tonj North County, Warrap State, Warrap Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) serves as a critical source of healthcare for thousands of people. For years, health workers relied on paper registers, limited connectivity and manual reporting systems while providing essential services under challenging conditions. These constraints often affected continuity of care, access to clinical guidance and timely reporting. Today, healthcare delivery at the facility is being transformed through support from the World Health Organization (WHO), which provided the Digital Care Companion (DCC), a desktop computer and Starlink internet connectivity. Together, these tools are helping strengthen primary healthcare services by improving patient management, access to information and clinical decision-making at the point of care. For the facility’s In-Charge, the introduction of the DCC represented both an opportunity and a challenge. “I was very happy when the system arrived because we knew it would improve our services. But I had never operated a computer before. Everything we did was on paper, and I was worried about whether I could learn,” Joseph Gak, the Facility In-Charge, recalled. Through practical training, mentorship and ongoing support, he gradually gained confidence in using the system. Today, he uses it to register patients, document consultations, track referrals and generate reports that support both patient care and health planning. Three months on, Joseph and his team recorded 847 consultations for 785 patients: about 13 patients on clinic days, and up to 97 in a single week. This is from a team that, until this year, kept every record on paper. South Sudan has just 7.9 health workers for every 10,000 people, far below the 44.5 per 10,000 that WHO considers necessary for universal health coverage. Facilities like Warrap PHCC are run by clinical officers and nurses, often working alone. Every skill they gain, and every tool that supports their judgement, directly expands the quality of care a entire community receives.
