#Digitization
Okay I should interrupt this thread to explain why I have all these

One of my major responsibilities at my old library was completing a mass scale digitization project for our educational VHS collection. These are clips that I saved while I was doing digitization

digitization is an amazing tool for dissemination and preservation, I love it personally and do almost all my reading on various e-readers now, but hopefully we have learned over the past decade that digital storage is not forever! also has costs and vulnerabilities! always have an analog backup!
Rebecca, why not digitize?

Because that takes resources too and I’m trying to solve a physical issue—publisher storage, library deacquisition (which always freaks ppl out), anxiety about disappearing archives.

Yep! Digitization is a great archival strategy—but only for creating temporary use copies that let the original rest in controlled storage with less disturbance.

Wul, I am NOT one to bring digitization into the thread, and.

IT WAS SIMPLER

Digitization is also not a solution to storage needs (as I'm sure OP knows). But it's way bigger that just "takes too many resources." The post is a nice sentiment, but the reality just doesn't work.

In truth I’m working towards Torah digitization

Wild that the last TNG I watched while he was alive was a 5 episode VHS digitization of the Fans' Choice marathon from 1994 on a plane

"Fuzzier" domains have always taken longer to benefit from computers / digitization, and when adoption arrives it is often not (rarely ever?) uniformly positive, see e.g. EMRs in medicine.

[i've been told not to leave the digitization notes IN the folder for OUR collections, but this is a collection we're contracted to digitize. i should have put them back. i did in fact fuck up. so i shouldn't be annoyed. AND YET!!!]

The protagonists are our mecha pilot, an earnest utopian youth whose hazy memories of the old world are of a terrified childhood and her "autopilot", who is a volunteer soul - a woman who died in duty while wearing a digitization recorder. The brainwave patterns can boot and run, but degrade rapidly

What qualifies Soloman to be minister of AI/digitization? Other than this at least?

"Solomon was fired from CBC after...he allegedly took secret commissions for brokering art sales...to people he was connected to through his CBC position, including Mark Carney."

My experience is logistics, and a place I worked recently is a lynchpin for a *very* large org. Digitization has allowed them to reduce headcount by around 40 to a bit over 100 in a decade. The positions lost included all the in-house IT. We can't fix our own printers never mind stuff like this!

Steve beat me to it lol! @videoteca-nod.org did the digitization work on this material. Here is another test recording of Turner & Davis exchanging the machine in one of the ballrooms of the Sir Walter Hotel in Raleigh NC 1932.

Where did you send for digitization? My dad was on top of that stuff. Back in early aughts he had our home movies turned into to VHS. I then digitized them to cds and then mp4. But we have DHs films, which we only had some digitized.

Digital humanities has 2 distinct tracks:

Archives ‘digitization’ (publishing)
Proto-AI (e.g. text-mining, neural nets)

Is the latter consumer-driven or research-based?

🧵 The seventh passage considers the transformation of all media through their digitization as statistical/stochastical AI.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer explores questions of human consciousness and its digitization in a way that’s fascinating, emotional, and often provocative. The gameplay is fairly repetitive – you use a giant sledgehammer to smash your way through the environment and deal with your digitized former

I'm still in favor of digitization like what the internet archive does. I'm just extremely opposed to digital REPLACING physical media and I don't believe that digital archiving is a replacement for physical archiving.

Maybe not quite what you’re looking for, but if archival research is fieldwork I think Lara Putnam’s “The Transnational and the Text-Searchable” makes a lot of important and overlooked points about the impact of digitization on research www.jstor.org/stable/43955...

Ah, I asked because, until my recent retirement, I led the office that runs that project (Digitization Program Office). Was hoping they nabbed you for it!

Yes, we worked with the transcription center to get some metadata transcribed for an earlier bee digitization project around that time. Thanks for helping with that effort.

Phenomenal to this day. And it was MADE BY AN INTERN! They just let them sit around for their internship and plan out the entire sequence, draw all the key frames and inbetweens, and, as far as I know, even do most of the digitization. :v

Maybe the solution is I figure out the solution and become the only vendor offering Fisher Price video digitization and archiving (and ONLY Fisher Price video digitization and archiving). I’ll have someone make custom LTO tapes the orange of their old turntable platter.
