Second, the metaphor is ahistorical: England was conquered by the Romance speaking vikings and that's why it has so much vocabulary from Latin. The modern situation is a result of centuries of diglossia. And in a modern setting loanwords are from the usual source of loanwords: language cohabitation

Would it be valid to say that the feature of certain languages -- where there are different variations for all women/all men or for your mother-in-law -- is a form of diglossia?

Classical Chinese, like Egyptian, developed a strong diglossia (I.e. what was written diverges from how it was spoken) and for many years through its history, the written form stayed more constant than the spoken form, as people didn’t necessarily write 1-1 with how they spoke.

JNES has just published my article about the (potential) use of Hebrew among the Judeans of Yeb/Elephantine.
It has a little bit of everything: Contact/sociolinguistics, precative perfects, and lengthy footnotes on škn!

But part of the thing is that these words tend to be focused on by slightly different sets of research traditions (some also argue that they're part of a continuum, or that it's relevant whether the 2 varieties are closely related)

Diglossia describes a particular societal structure where people broadly agree on which environments each variety is used in, whereas codeswitching is often more flexible, one person might codeswitch in different contexts than another
February 21, 2026 at 7:41 AM
That's a great question and honestly it's just that we try and introduce no more than one new piece of terminology per episode, so that would have been two!

But basically diglossia can involve codeswitching, but not all codeswchng is diglossia. Eg people codeswitch btwn English & French in Montreal

I'm not sure if there are widespread stats about it so we're hedging our bets with "some" but yes, the episode is about how diglossia is super common and often not recognized as such!
