33/ In June, Frank Schnettler's electrical resistivity and thermal expansion studies unambiguously proved the existence of the first four allotropes. The sources are not perfectly clear on the order, but by December the alpha, beta, gamma, delta and epsilon phases were all reported.

Dilatometry measures small changes in the length of a precisely-shaped metal sample during heating and cooling. The "arrests", sudden jumps of large length change at a threshold temperature, indicate a phase transformation. Note also the hysteresis effect: the cooling curve does not just reverse the heating curve perfectly. This graph is from February 1945, when Eugene D. Selmanoff and Allen E. Martin finished work with their high-precision quartz dilatometer.

Dr. Frank J. Schnettler's Manhattan Project security photo. Schnettler worked at Bell Labs for almost his entire career; the only exceptions were his Ph.D at Columbia (his advisor Eric Jette would later also be a Manhattan Project metallurgist) and his two years at Los Alamos. I was not able to track down many other life details for Dr. Schnettler, even birth and death years. Somewhat sad for someone whose work was, in a way that might seem small to outsiders, so foundational.
