Today's historic pic: Double-ended EMD streamliners B74 and an A class unit from the A70-A79 series head VLine passenger train no 8105 bound for Dimboola away from platform 6 at Spencer Street station, Melbourne, January 18 1987. VLine ceased running passenger trains to Dimboola in 1993.

""Inspired by the writings of Sigmund Freud and Melbourne psychiatrist Reg Ellery, Nolan worked on a series of surrealist-inspired figures while stationed at Dimboola which powerfully channel a sense of war-time menace. Nostalgia for the sky and Farmer, Dimboola are from Nolan’s Dimboola sketchbook. These strange characters – an upward-gazing, feline-like devilish figure and local farmer whose features appear inverted by old age – reveal how Nolan created psychological, rather than specific, portraits of the people he encountered in the Wimmera. Nolan had previously used Dulux for painting, a household gloss paint based on a plastic medium called alkyd. Railway yards, Dimboola 1943 Ripolin enamel on canvas 77 x 64 cm signed and dated I.r: Ν 17-3-43 inscribed verso, Railway Station Railway Yards, Dimboola March 43 Ν Throughout the two year period Nolan maintained an almost daily exchange with his friends and supporters Sunday Reed and John Reed. The Nolan correspondence (amounting to over 200 letters) is a day by day account of Nolan’s social and intellectual life and a sustained commentary on his art and of things seen and experienced. For comparison one thinks of the Streeton and Roberts correspondence published in From Spike to Bulldog, or more accurately, given its size, character and range, of Vincent Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo.
