Calendars are just fancy tables!. For time management, information on time is necessary so we can manage it and that's why calendars and schedules are so important.

Calendars and schedules are a fancy version of tables which show time. For example, a monthly calendar is a list of days in a month. We can then input activities, tasks, thoughts, or anything else we want in each section. A daily schedule can show us activities by when they happen. And a weekly schedule shows it by day of the week. The words are accompanied by small images of a monthly calendar of squares, a daily schedule that shows colored blocks of time and a line to demonstrate an activity, and a weekly calendar which has a block for each day of the week.

The level of detail is also important to consider before making a list. You want your list to have all the information you need without being overwhelming or hard to follow.

How to make The List: Detail. What level of detail does your list need? Think about your purpose. Maybe you're looking for general, big picture ideas. Maybe every task on your to do list has substeps that you want to detail out. Maybe only the most important items go on the list, but you want them clear and specific. Maybe it's something completely different. Whatever level of detail is right for your list, knowing what it is will help you know what goes on the list and what doesn't.

Tools for brainstorming. Taking everything out of the brain can sometimes be hard. I like to use two main methods: 1. Mind map: put a theme in the center and then use arrows to connect ideas as they come. 2. Journal: set a timer and write without picking the pen off the paper until it goes off. There are many variations to these methods. The goal here is not to have a perfect system, but to do whatever you can to get ideas from your brain somewhere else. Once they're somewhere else, you can organize them.

Ack. This is one I struggle with when it comes to time management. When there's a lot to do and not enough time, it feels like I HAVE to go fast.

Slow down. The more there is to do, the slower you should go. It feels really counterintuitive. However, when you go fast, you increase the risk of making a mistake. Fixing a mistake uses more time than doing the thing slowly, but accurately in the first place. Mistakes are also unpredictable, it is harder to be in control o f how you spend your time because you can't predict your mistakes. It's impossible to avoid all mistakes, but minimizing the need to go back and redo things improves overall time management.
