In one city, the majority of the population were disbudded to subjugate them and take away their connection to their religion and culture (horns are seen by many as spiritual conduits, so their removal is like clipping the wings of the soul.)

Oscar! Oscar is a big, confident boy with a little horn growth on one side. Before they came here the dairy herd was "disbudded"- a process where baby goats (and sheep and cows) have the horn cells burned out of their skulls. Apparently a few of Oscar's cells survived because he has a bump one side!
It's definitely among the least fun jobs on the farm, but it is a genuine safety issue and so our goats are all disbudded.

Goats can also be polled, which means they naturally have no horns. There is also disbudding, where the spot where horns would grow from are burned. This prevents the horns from growing.

Don't I know it. I've and had my horns disbudded with a hot iron, my balls chopped off, & a huge tag stapled through my ear - all without anesthetic.
And then you only give me 2 yrs of life before inflicting the horrors of the slaughterhouse on me (cows can live around 20 yrs).

No, they really don't come off easily. We have many other goats with horns that are fine, and sheep, too. She's just very curious and gets herself in predicaments! Most goats have horns, so the ones you grew up with were probably disbudded (burning out the horn cells) as babies.

I haven’t seen it disbudded since he won, but he talked about it with Dee and Drew before the competition and that was the plan!

The boy goats I had were disbudded before we got them (not our idea) and we wished they had been left alone bc the horns grew back 'wrong' which is a whole other risk factor about that process, a horn even curled backwards and was causing a lot of discomfort we had to get fixed a second time 🫠

These are all does. One is polled, the others are disbudded. I milk them and make soap, lotion, cheese, etc. We also process a few wethers for meat each year. We have about 18 does and 4 bucks with our next batch of kids due in a month. They are so much fun! 💗

Yes - I don’t put any in the ground until after frost but Esli wanted to bloom pretty much instantly after pushing above the soil lol. I disbudded a lot of her until she was better able to handle some cuts and then we were fine! Why did you panic?
