JFC. The Sonatype docs say the publishing plugin will automagically figure out to what repository the artifacts will be uploaded.

In reality, you need to manually add a snapshot repository under distributionManagement in your pom.xml.

I can only assume the abmysal state of docs is on purpose.
The central-publishing-maven-plugin supports snapshot releases directly. Publishing with a -SNAPSHOT version will automatically upload the component to the right location. Please be sure that you are using a version of the plugin equal to or newer than 0.7.0. If you want to publish your snapshots to your own hosting repository, the plugin respects Maven's < distributionManagement> configuration (Maven Documentation), which should allow you to configure a location for your -SNAPSHOT releases. Specifically, you will need to configure a ‹snapshotRepository> or a < repository> with ‹snapshots> ‹enabled>true</enabled></snapshots>. ‹distributionManagement> <snapshotRepository> <id>central</id> ‹urlshttps://central.sonatype.com/repository/maven-snapshots/</url> </snapshotRepository> </distributionManagement>

If I clone and patch a third party #maven project, how do I deploy it to my private repository? I would like to inject the values from outside in my pipeline, rather than change the distributionManagement part of the pom.

TIL - Maven can help with artifact relocation, create a pom with a pointing to the old one and a redirect with a WARN message will be displayed if someone still use the old location. 🤯
