The condition, defined as symptoms lasting at least two to three months after the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, can have a major impact on a person’s quality of life. Symptoms include problems thinking clearly, fatigue or low energy levels, dizziness, racing heart, shortness of breath, and problems sleeping. The SARS-CoV-2 virus can still be detected in the bodies of some people with Long COVID. But researchers don’t know whether antiviral therapies approved to treat mild-to-moderate COVID-19 would benefit people with Long COVID. An NIH-funded research team led by Drs. Lindsey Baden of Mass General Brigham and Kanecia Zimmerman of Duke Medical Center wanted to test whether a drug used for treating acute COVID-19 could improve Long COVID symptoms. The researchers also wanted to develop measures to assess and characterize Long COVID symptoms. Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that he will determine the Canadian government's response to new details regarding the unexplained health issues experienced by Canadian diplomats in Cuba nearly a decade ago once he has been fully briefed on the matter. The Globe and Mail reported last week that Canada and the United States were collaborating closely in Cuba between 2016 and 2018 when Canadian and American diplomats began reporting symptoms including nosebleeds, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, and memory loss. The report cited sources indicating that a Canadian diplomat was sharing intelligence with U.S. spies in Havana and that Canadians were using satellite equipment brought into Cuba under diplomatic cover by the U.S. During a press conference in Vancouver, Carney acknowledged the duty Canada owes its diplomats, stating, 'We owe a responsibility, and we discharge a responsibility, a duty of care for Canadian diplomats who serve on the front lines on behalf of Canadians.' He emphasized that he expects to be briefed on the situation before making any decisions. Security experts have called for an independent parliamentary examination into whether Russia targeted the diplomats for allegedly assisting U.S. intelligence agencies and how Ottawa handled the situation. The Justice Department confirmed it invoked Section 38 of the Canada Evidence Act to keep secret new details of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit brought by 10 Canadian diplomats who were stationed in Havana. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand described the diplomats' health issues as a human-resources concern, sidestepping calls for a parliamentary inquiry into whether they were harmed by alleged sonic attacks linked to Russia. Paul Miller, counsel for the Canadian diplomats and their families, criticized Anand's dismissal of the episode as a human-resources problem, stating, 'The diplomats and their family members who have suffered all these years deserve better.' Scientists have offered conflicting explanations for Havana Syndrome, with some researchers suggesting the symptoms resemble concussions, while others propose pre-existing medical issues, psychosomatic conditions, or environmental factors. The Pentagon has reportedly spent over a year testing a device that some investigators believe could be the cause of Havana Syndrome-type ailments. Defence Minister David McGuinty declined to discuss satellite technology sharing between Canada and the U.S. at embassies, stating, 'There are some things I can't talk about. Some things remain confidential. Some things remain secret.' The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) has been urged to review the matter, but the committee has stated it will only comment through its official reports.
