Albryan, the ranger character from Forest of the Morning, has at least two potential romances I didn't plan for him.

Man this is long but it gave me so much joy to write and it's a very very rare moment where Nico & Fish can just relax and be themselves around other people

#QueerPrompts Feb 7: Joy
That night at the campfire, Dongari straightened the strings on the lute. It played in the end, though it was creaky and out of tune. Fish listened with only half an ear, sipping at his coffee, but Nico leaned back and studied her technique, one brow slightly cocked as he listened critically. After missing a few notes, Dongari ran out of melodies she knew by heart. Àfghûl, who had been sitting quietly all the while on a bit of desert driftwood, suddenly grinned and drew something from his pocket. It was a primitive mouth-organ, she saw, as he started to play. The tune was quick and lively, and soon she noticed that the two mercenaries were tapping their feet in time to it. She listened a little longer, trying to reach sure ground and remember her earliest lessons in lute-playing, then tentatively she joined in harmony with the Khaitan boy’s melody. The old lute creaked and squeaked, the harmonica sawed, and the star-carpeted desert night pressed around the cosy circle of the campfire. It was a terrible racket, and Dongari couldn’t help grinning at the ridiculousness of it all. Nico nudged his partner. ‘Reminds me of the sticks in Svanfeld. We used to dance.’ Fish paused, his tin mug halfway to his lips. ‘Dance? You?’ ‘Yeah—come on!’ Dongari snorted back laughter, delighted and horrified both in equal measure, as the huge mercenary suddenly sprang to his feet, pulling his partner along with him, the coffee left forgotten on the ground. He was a surprisingly good dancer, she realized. Fish hung back, hesitating. ‘Nico, you know I can’t—’ ‘Yes, you can.’ Nico took both his partner’s hands in his and swept him around; Fish had only an instant to sort out his feet, and Dongari briefly wondered whether they would both end up in a bruised heap on the sand—but then he seemed to find his own rhythm in Nico’s, moving in a complimentary pattern to his partner, gazing at his face, the two of them completely engrossed despite the awful harmonies of the two battered instruments.

Even more about him: despite being a huge scary dude, Nico is actually one of the softest of my characters, working class & anti-monarchist, and can sing & dance really well - all things that go against the "dumb bruiser" character archetype he's based on. ⚔️

#WritingPrompt #QueerWriters
Text: Nico shrugged, even as he felt anger chew at his heart. It was never my choice. I did the jobs that found me, the ones people would pay good money for. I never trained for this. Out loud he said: “I’ve never killed anyone who didn’t deserve it in some way. Guildsmen. Minor nobles. Corrupt politicians. You’re dreaming if you think any of them are innocent.” A half-smile hovered on her lips. “So that’s why you don’t like Anspeare.” “Seems to me that everyone’s bending over backwards to oblige this man just because he was born into the right family,” Nico said shortly. “You’re hoping he’s going to be salvation for Vailana, but he’s just another petty tyrant. Exchange Arran for Anspeare, it’s still just another king. Vailana once had an independent Council.” Text: They had not gone far beneath the trees when Nico reached out and gripped Fish’s wrist, drawing them both to a halt. “You tailed me,” he said quietly. “Why?” The boy turned and gazed steadfastly at him. “Because I wanted to be sure you’d come back.” Ordinarily, Nico would have thought nothing of such words. But the moon was high and frosting the forest with silver, and his blood was boiling hot after that brush with death, and the loveliest boy he’d ever seen in his life was looking at him with eyes bright with reflected moonglow. There was a mark on Fish’s face; Nico hadn’t noticed it before, but now he remembered Vagar tossing his crossbow aside and it grazing Fish on the temple before hitting the ground. It was a darkening bruise now, with a smear of blood in the center. Nico reached out and took Fish’s chin, gently turning his head to see the wound. But the boy flinched from his touch, and the moment shattered like silver glass. “Just a bruise,” Fish muttered, turning his head away, and Nico scowled in embarrassment. He had noticed, awhile before, that Fish did not like to be touched, at least not by him, and never in a way that was unexpected. Text: Nico nudged his partner. He was a surprisingly good dancer, at least for a certain style of folk dancing that reminded her of the wild men’s dances of eastern Limojenga, where she had once witnessed her distant cousins at their desert revelries. Text: Nico appeared to be steeling himself for something. “You know—the other night. When we were in Kay-liss. That minstrel that came by when we were around the fire. Varli, his name was, if I remember rightly.” “What about him?” Fish asked, when his partner hesitated for a long moment. He remembered the man well; his singing had been dreadful, but his chattiness when not singing had been worse. Fish had no ear for music himself, but sometimes, when the mood was right and the campfire burned low, Nico would sing, softly, melodiously, the haunting melodies of his mountain homeland.
