Very sad news. I learned more about severe local convective storms from Chuck Doswell than anyone else. He was a friend and mentor.

The weather world has lost a true giant of a bigger-than-life scholar, mentor, practitioner, and leader. The world is a dimmer place today without Dr. Charles Doswell. Heartbreaking 💔

Doswell et al. (1996): read it, and then read it again a few more times: journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

"The halls of NWS Headquarters reek with the stench of people enjoying the trouble they can create for local staffs with a simple phone call." ~ Dr. Charles Doswell III

Chuck Doswell war entscheidend an der globalen Grundlagenforschung über schwere Gewitter, Superzellen und Tornados beteiligt. Auf ihn gehen die legendären Gewitterzutaten "Feuchte, Instabilität und Hebung" zurück.
Rest in peace, Chuck.

The sad news reached us that Chuck Doswell has passed away. ESSL will be forever grateful for his intensive engagement. With his unique talent to reduce severe storm science to its core and his engaging style of teaching and friendliness he has made an enormous impact on European storm research.

Doswell once asked on a forum "What the heck are tornadoes FOR?" Here is a screen shot of our email conversation.

Well, after setting up my ebay search over 12 years ago I've finally managed to get a set of the Small Faces miniatures by George Doswell, as featured on the cover of Paul Weller's Stanley Road LP

First thing he said after I said my PhD research was on deep convection, “But have you ever been storm chasin’?” The man knew how to ask tough questions! RIP Dr. Doswell.

My field lost a titan this morning.
Rest in power, Dr. Chuck Doswell, knowing how much good you did in this world. You advanced tornado and forecasting science and practice more than many other meteorologists combined. I shall miss your wise counsel and imperviousness to bullshit of all kinds.

I will miss my friend Charles A. Doswell III.

Chuck was an outstanding scientist and inspiring teacher. At the core of his work was the motivation to improve warnings and save lives.

He supported the European Severe Storms research and weather sagety community A LOT.

I choose to believe that Al Moller, in his unique drawl, greeted Dr. Doswell this morning with a “What in the f*** are you doing here?”

And then they jumped in the car and headed for Plainview.
