John Singer Sargent is one of my favourite artists. A gay nomadic American, his draughtsmanship was superlative & he was unusual in depicting beautiful men & women with sensuality. Most artists only manage one. Here is his infamous Madame X (1884)

Superb example of draughtsmanship in this self portrait from 1947 by Raymond Sheppard, best known as the illustrator for Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea.'

'Gramophone,' (1930) is a work in which the everyday and the prosaic are particularly emphasised and underlines Rudolf Dischinger's solid draughtsmanship.

'Paint and Morning Tea,' (1937) is typical of Herbert Badham's gentle realism (here a self portrait with his colourful mother) and reflects his mastery of draughtsmanship and skill in using the principles of perspective to establish an unexpected viewpoint.

'A Woman in a Red Dress Knitting.' (1936) Whilst at the Slade School, Jesse Dale Cast took Henry Tonks’s draughtsmanship to heart. His figures have an almost sculptural stillness about them, reminiscent of Dod Procter’s work from a decade earlier.

This superb drawing of Gerald Brockhurst's first wife Anaïs was made around 1913 - he had barely graduated and had sold the gold medal for draughtsmanship from the Royal Academy Schools in a moment of poverty, drawings were much cheaper to produce than expensive paintings.

'House in Maida Vale.' (c1956) Adrian Daintrey's work is instantly recognisable with a style very much his own. Like Edward Bawden and Edward Ardizzone he belongs to an English tradition of fluent and well observed draughtsmanship.

'Interior.' (c1980) Peter Kelly's painting shows the fine classical draughtsmanship that characterises much of his work. His preference for a limited palette of muted tones occasionally warmed by brighter accents are reminiscent of the Dutch and Scandinavian Schools.

'Young Woman Seated.' (1910) Writing about William Orpen's draughtsmanship, a critic of The Art News commented: 'his drawings are remarkable not only for their delicacy of handling, but for the loving care with which the pencil has revelled in beauty of form.'

'Head of a Man,' (1904) is one of Frederick Sandys' (born on this day 1829) most striking male portraits. In the perfect draughtsmanship, the intricate observations, the unfaltering surety, and vigour of the touch, we clearly see the influence of Hans Holbein.

James Stroudley worked through a series of influences, from early Italian artists to Cubism, in order to achieve the draughtsmanship that underpins his work. This landscape depicts the cliffs in Saltdean, East Sussex, from around 1940.

This is an interesting addition to 12 Clairmont Gardens in the west end of Glasgow. Dating from 1898, it was designed by John Honeyman and Keppie, with draughtsmanship by a young Charles Rennie MacKintosh.

In 'Along the Shore,' (1914) Edward Southall has chosen to depict the elegance of a female only family outing to the seaside, in this case Southwold on the Suffolk coast. Each of the figures is beautifully studied, typical of Southall's refined draughtsmanship.

The draughtsmanship in this image is amazing.
Gustav Klimt was 17 years old in 1879 when he drew (with charcoal and black chalk) this portrait of a young girl. His superb technical ability as a draughtsman is evident even as a teenager in the way he uses shadow to create a three-dimensional picture on paper.

We see in Robert Sivell's picture his love for Renaissance paintings - his draughtsmanship is superb; he carried this over to the students he taught at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. 'Dehydration of Herrings,' was commissioned by War Artists' Advisory Committee in 1943.

'Mrs James MacLehose.' A focus on draughtsmanship is very much evident in William Strang’s work. He produced over 500 portrait sketches in the early 1900s, these proved so popular that he made two trips to New York in 1904 and 1905 to make drawings of his American patrons.

Even their political cartoons are better. The draughtsmanship is superb, the visual joke clear and (ahem) pointed, and nothing has to have a label stuck on it.
