Even though it feels like my drawing skills have plateaued, and I've made peace that my ability will never be THAT much better than what I can currently do, it's really fulfilling to finally be able to illustrate the original characters I've had in my head all these years

#stocktoncon print progress. I’ve been tinkering with fonts, as I knew it’d be tough to find something good-looking, and distort well in Photoshop! This was the best result of at least three attempts. Ignore the weird colors - I tend to block things out with high contrast elements. #drawingsky

A key to improvement is recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. This gets harder to confront as you get busier and have to work faster - overall, it’s a good problem to have! I feel I’m good with clarity, but things can become flat. What can I do to boost the dynamics? #drawingsky

I think this concept is far enough along to move into Photoshop - I’ll scan this art and draw over it, but you risk preserving mistakes as well as strengths. Other challenges will surface once I apply a font - I can cheat however I like here, but the next step will be less forgiving! #drawingsky

The primary change I’m considering at this point is swapping the words, putting “StocktonCon” on top and “Winter” on the bottom. I’ll try and evoke the font/colors of the Stockton Kings logo, since it’s their home venue. I try to use free fonts unless I can’t get the feeling I want. #drawingsky

I’m happy with this concept, so now I’ll think about filling the rest of the design. I’m not a big fan of backgrounds, and I don’t think an elaborate BG will add much here. I remember liking the circus-poster feeling of this Superman cover, so I decided to mimic that effect with text. #drawingsky

As you can see, I’m pretty happy with the alien, as I’m starting to refine that part. Still feeling out Buzz’s pose, but I like how his right leg is coming along! #drawingsky

I looked at some online reference, and decided to try staging things from the opposite side of the backboard. The alien’s looking good, but I’m still struggling with Buzz’s pose and proportions. He’s a chunky toy, so sometimes posing him can be tricky (the computer model’s no different)! #drawingsky

I left Buzz’s extra arm so you could see how I explore poses. All of this will go away once I reach the Photoshop stage, anyway! #drawingsky

This time, I’m starting early - and I’m not accepting the first thing that comes out of my Sharpie. This first stab didn’t feel right: If I’m going to cheat and allow the Pizza Planet Alien to fly, then Buzz should be able to! #drawingsky

A caricature of Disney veteran (and one of my animation teachers), Bob McCrea. I showed the rough to some of my fellow classmates, and was proud to get multiple approvals! The situation is an inside joke, but I thought folks might enjoy the drawing anyway. #drawingsky #artsky #cartoonsky #calarts
