Denathrius has a TON of potential post-Shadowlands, but it fundamentally needs to be separate from the Jailer, not piggybacking on his 5D chess schemes.
Let him be something new, something that fits Dreadlords better, and something that shakes up the cast of Warcraft villains.

I second this wholeheartedly.
Anguish magic and Mogu anima being tied to... well, anima, makes complete sense, but Astalor being an agent of Denathrius or a Nathrezim does not.
Characters are capable of being sinister or even using dark magics without being Dreadlords. It'd ruin him completely.

Okay I’ve really got to say: I absolutely hate the theories that Astalor is a secret agent of Denathrius lol
It would be *incredibly* lame if we took the one Blood Elf who is still unambiguously themed around dark methods of survival, and blame that on secret cosmic death plots.

It would be the perfect chance to return the Dreadlords to what they were pre-Shadowlands: schemers who ultimately serve nobody but themselves.
No master plan to remake the cosmos, just pure, on-the-fly self servitude so that they can be "always on the winning side".

It would also make for very easy justification for the dreadlords to fracture into different motivations and ideologies.
Some can still serve Denathrius, but each dreadlord would ultimately have their own version of "the winning side", like the Legion ones we've seen.

Hell, depending on if the Legion dreadlords were still considered beings of death or true demons, either Varimathras or Mal'ganis *has* to still be alive somewhere, given where they died.

As much as I think it isn't *good* story, Shadowlands is pretty clear that Denathrius was fully a servant of the Jailer.
Not only does he end up dying for the sake of his plans, his Dreadlords continue to serve the Jailer all the way to their deaths in the Sepulcher.

A controversial take, but I enjoy the Dreadlords being sent to disrupt EVERY major cosmic force on behalf of Denathrius.
