The project was conducted in collaboration with i-Probe Inc., Parsons Corporation, and the University of Cincinnati and funded by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). During the trial, Honda test vehicles equipped with vision and LiDAR sensors monitored about 3,000 miles of roadways in central and southeastern Ohio. Honda vehicles used to proactively report road safety issues in nation-first pilot
Honda and DriveOhio have teamed up on a new road safety initiative in which Honda vehicles are being used to collect real-time data that can advise about potential issues and road deficiencies before they become a problem. Honda’s Proactive Roadway Maintenance System, which has been in prototyping since 2021, uses "advanced vision and LiDAR sensors" to identify issues such as worn or obstructed road signs, damaged guardrails, rough roads and emerging potholes.

Came across this article, a study looking at the future of self-driving vehicles in rural areas. It points out something I hadn’t considered - spotty GPS! I know of pockets in the large city I live in with spotty GPS but that’s prob just my carrier.

What If the Sensors on Your Car Were Inspecting Potholes for the Government? Honda Found Out
Modern cars are already equipped with various cameras and sensors that monitor other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to minimize or prevent collisions with them, and that technology is rapidly approaching, especially with autonomous taxis. But what if that existing technology could report bad potholes or even faulty lane markings and signage? Honda found out. With an extensive manufacturing and development center in Ohio, Honda partnered with the DriveOhio division of the Ohio Department of Transportation for a two-year study that evaluated whether vehicle-generated data would be effective in reporting roads in need of repair or reduced signage and directions to the transportation agency.
