Now if you want to make the point that planning rules are too much beaurocracy and often not effective, I will happily agree.

The problem is, James Cleverly MP, Essex has been building roads in this part of the county for years and yet they have only unlocked car-dependent development.

The fact those changes are happening (on a section that is already dualled) suggests that National Highways thinks there is no chance of any major changes in the near future. The endless call for dualling is a lost cause.

Erm other industry. Most industries these days can be placed anywhere in the U.K. The issue with siting new industry often comes down to funding and infrastructure. Places like the NE have been back of the queue for infrastructure & transport for years (parts of the A1 aren’t even dualled up here!).

The Chronicle's "we should dual the A1 for safety" neglects to mention the number of crashes on the already dualled section of the A1 as can seen below and it isn't the number of carriageways that's the problem, it's the junctions.

Whilst I don't want to see the A1 dualled (service road, 50mph limit and avg speed cams would make it safer) it is interesting to consider the contrast between that and an £11bn road tunnel in Essex.

This'll presumably be in the "watch my lips" category then? In the run up to 2026 I imagine we'll hear a lot more of this sort of promise - e.g. ferries, better longer faster dualled roads, flying pigs?

No one is donating 36m because they think that the A1 should be dualled. Giving fifty quid suggests you want that part to win the election. Tens of millions might well be in the hope of more than that.
